Before you begin, make sure you have your NetID login account details before attempting to connect!

Launch Connect to Server

  1. From the Finder menu, click Go.
  2. Click Connect to Server from Go’s drop down menu.
  3. Alternatively, you can also press Command+K to launch Connect to Server.

Connect to a SMB Share

  1. In the Server Address field, enter smb:// to define the network protocol for SMB, and then enter either the IP address or the hostname of the server.

  2. To add the server to your Favorite Servers list, click the ‘+’ button.
  3. Click Connect to connect to the share.
  4. When prompted, enter your NetID user name and password to connect to server.
  5. Click Connect to connect to the server.
  6. Violà! Once the connection is made, the share you have access to will appear on your desktop.

Step 1. Setup SMB server on Mac

Click Apple menu from the top menu bar, choose System Preferences from the drop-down menu, choose Sharing >> File Sharing.

Click Options, select ‘Share files and folders using SMB‘. Select the user account that will be used to share files with other devices or users, enter the password for that user, then click OK, Done.

Step 2. Connect iPhone to Mac SMB file sharing

Run Documents app on iPhone, switch to the Services tab from the bottom. Tap Add Account >> Windows SMB. The SMB protocol was developed by Microsoft. Thus it is also known as Windows file sharing or Windows SMB, Windows SMB protocol.

On the Windows SMB screen, you need to type in Mac SMB URL address which can be found in the Mac Sharing screen, your Mac login username and password. SMB server title and domain are optional. When you are done, tap Save button at the top right corner to finish. You will then open the Mac SMB server from iPhone. You can then copy files between iPhone and Mac wirelessly through the SMB protocol.
